The stories of humanity have always been populated by fantastic creatures : painted in prehistoric caves, in the oral traditions and myths of antiquity, in fables, tales, legends as well as in religious stories from the Middle Ages, in research writings and in all the art forms of the Modern era and, finally, in a good number of contemporary fictions. The 20th century saw the appearance of a new field of research, controversial but very real: cryptozoology.

I have created a cryptozoologists “cabinet of curiosities” for the start of the exhibition : Testimonies left by scientists encourage the visitor to discover the study of fantastic creatures, to look for proof of their existence, to smell, touch, hear and see them with their own eyes.

The main part of the exhibition is divided into “History”, “Fantasy”, “Science-Fiction” and “Steampunk” and punctuated by 4 installations / wall drawings, which were especially created combining comic drawing and stage design : The illustrator used three stages of a comic drawing on one frame (sketching, inking, and coloring), sculptors realized a part of the drawing for real (plant parts, dragon head, shipwreck parts, workbench).

The MBA presented art objects and iconography (paintings, sculptures, engravings, photographs, drawings, earthenware, lace) whose fantastic bestiary continuously dialogued with cartoon creatures : Marianne Alexandre – Alex Alice – Paola AntistaMathieu BabletAmaury Bündgen – Clarke – Hub – Jérôme Lereculey – Carita Lupattelli & Saverio Tenuta – Vittoria MaciociRoy & Inaki MirandaMathieu Reynès – Rona – Gou Tanabe – Lucile Thibaudier – Marcial ToledanoOlivier VatineSuheb Zako

At the end we present the different stages of the creation of a comic book by Jérôme Lereculey, and propose a reading corner in the hall.
